Imagine Preschool at CCRI Selected as State Pre-Kindergarten Program

Applications now available at Imagine Preschool for Warwick residents interested in participating in the program.

August 5, 2011 (Warwick, RI)--Imagine Preschool, located on the Community College of Rhode Island Warwick campus, has received notice that it will be funded as part of the state’s Pre-Kindergarten Program.  As a participating pre-kindergarten program, Imagine will provide free pre-kindergarten education to 18 Warwick children who are chosen by lottery on August 19th.

“We are tremendously grateful to Commissioner Deborah Gist, and the rest of the Rhode Island Department of Education staff, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that funding remained available for this critically important program,” said Imagine Preschool Director Simmy Carter.  “Participation in pre-kindergarten programs is one of the most important factors in life-long success, and to be able to offer this benefit free of charge to Warwick residents is incredibly exciting.”

The benefits of quality pre-kindergarten programs are both well documented, and long-lasting.  They include:

  • Increased high school graduation rates.
  • Improved results on standardized tests.
  • Reduced grade repetition.
  • Reduced criminal justice involvement and teen pregnancy rates later in life.
  • Higher rates of employment and compensation as adults.

To be eligible for the Imagine classroom, a child must be a resident of Warwick and must turn 4 years of age by September 1, 2011.  The school year will last from mid-September through mid-June and classes will run 5 days a week.  In order to be considered for the program, families need to pick up an application at Imagine Preschool and return the completed application by no later than Thursday, August 18.  All applications will then be entered in to state-sanctioned lottery on August 19, and selected applicants will be notified by phone.
